Obituary For George Lawson
George Lawson passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30,2025 at the age of 90 in Dallas, Texas. George was born in Battle, Louisiana, in East Feliciana Parish, but resided most of his life in Baker, Louisiana. He was the fourth oldest son of ten children born to the late Joseph and Viola Lawson, Sr.
From an early age, George was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, carrying his faith throughout his life. He was a long-time member and dedicated deacon at Rock Zion Baptist Church. He retired from the East Baton Rouge City Parrish Sanitation Department.
He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. George found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially fishing and gardening, which brought him peace and contentment.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted sons, George Lawson (Travis Battle) of DeSoto, Texas, Darrell Lawson (Paulette) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two step-sons, Odis Gilmore (Marie) of Port Allen, Louisiana, and Zale Gilmore of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; three step-daughters, Kathy Gilmore Pate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Emmalean Jenkins (Spahne) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dietra Wilson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two brothers, Robert (Ora) Lawson of Baker, Louisiana, and Donald (Peggy) Lawson of South Carolina; two sisters, Gloria Lawson of El Paso, Texas, and Laura Jean Lawson of Baker, Louisiana; several grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and cherished friends.
George was in the first class that graduated from the first known school for Negroes in Zackery, Louisiana in 1955 – Northwestern High School. The school experienced tremendous academic and athletic success, being known throughout the state for its academic excellence and winning tradition in football, track, baseball and basketball. George was an exceptional basketball player while he attended Northwestern.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Lawson, Jr.; his wives, Lottie C. Lawson and Nancy T. Lawson; his son Kenneth A. Clark; three brothers, Joseph Lawson, Jr., David Lawson, Sr., and John Lawson; one sister, Eula Mae Lawson; and two sisters-in-law, Hattie B. Lawson and Rosemary Lawson.
George will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His love for his family, his faith, and his passions for fishing and gardening will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
May George rest in eternal peace.
